Lupus Research Institute to Testify on Behalf of Lupus Patients at Federal Appropriations Subcommittee Hearing

The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) is proud to have been selected to testify on behalf of the lupus community at a public witness hearing of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies this Wednesday, March 13.

Speaking for the LRI is renowned lupus expert, Dr. Richard Furie, Director, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Autoimmune Disease Treatment Center and Program in Novel Therapeutics and Chief, Division of Rheumatology and Allergy-Clinical Immunology North Shore – LIJ Health System, NY.

Dr. Furie will request that the committee strongly support the nation’s biomedical research enterprise through funding to the National Institutes of Health in the Fiscal 2014 appropriations bill to continue innovation in areas of exceptional promise for all patients. His testimony will provide the Committee with a window into the particular suffering of the 1.5 million lupus patients living with a disabling and life-threatening disease that remains in desperate need of safer and more effective treatments.  Dr. Furie will also communicate why the federal government must invest in finding answers to lupus as the prototype for over 100 autoimmune diseases affecting one in five Americans.
