Changing the Course of Lupus Research
Lupus Research Institute $6 Million Investment Yields $23 Million in Government and Other Funding
The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) started funding
novel research in lupus just six years ago.
Impatient for better treatments and a cure for this
complex and chronic disease, families
and people with lupus sought out strategic
advice from the nation's top scientists.
The LRI has followed the strategy the experts
outlinedto think outside the box and look in
unexpected places and directions for new answers on
lupusever since.
In 2001 and 2002, the Institute awarded 3-year
grants to 23 investigators. They have now completed
their work, published
exciting data, and won millions in government and
other funding to expand and build upon their findings.
A recent professional assessment of these two groups
found that:
- 65 percent of researchers have gone on to
secure extended funding to pursue their
hypotheses
- an overall $6 million Lupus Research Institute
investment has turned into more than $23 million in
new government grants and other support
- the scientists published 46 papers, many of them
in top-tier journalsincluding two breakthrough
discoveries in Science.
- seven projects show early promise for
translation into direct patient care: 2 new drug
therapies (already in development) and 5 new
diagnostic tools (now being tested in
patients).

Two Discoveries in Lupus Genetics Reported
Results Offer New Clues to What Makes a Person Prone to Lupus
Major discoveries that shed new light on how two
different genes contribute to lupus
have been announced.
Building on work initially funded by the Lupus
Research Institute, the findings published in the
prestigious journal, Science, offer real hope
for better understanding and treating this complex
disease that affects more than 1.5 million Americans.
"These papers provide
important insight into genetic factors that can
contribute to the development of lupus, and
therefore, potential new therapeutic targets," said
Ann Marshak-Rothstein, PhD, professor of
microbiology at Boston University School of
Medicine.

Running for Lupus
Research Congratulations to marathon
runners in Massachusetts and Minnesota who together
have raised more than $17,000 for the Lupus Research
Institute!
"Jessie runs a marathon every day," explains Rebecca
Russell of her 17-year-old sister, who was
diagnosed with lupus in March 2005. "She takes 140
pills a week, has gone through six monthly sessions
of chemotherapy, and has Stage 4 lupus nephritis."
Rebecca ran in April's Boston Marathon with Jessie's
friend and field hockey coach, Erin Cronin. The two,
with help from siblings and friends and the
community as a whole, raised thousands for lupus
research.
Several states over and two months laterin
uncharacteristic June heat and humidity for Duluth,
Minnesotathe Colorado father-daughter team of
Martin and Krista Greer took part in what they
called a "Run Against the Wolf' marathon (otherwise
known as "Grandma's Marathon") to raise funds for
lupus research as well. Both Martin's wife, Shari
Leigh, and eldest daughter, Shannon, have lupus.
Thank you for your remarkable efforts!
