Lupus Research Institute Launches Chicago Website
Today, the Lupus Research Institute's Chicago
division officially launches
its website, www.LRIChicago.org.
Founded in spring 2006 by prominent members
of the Chicago lupus community, the LRI
Chicago aims to increase lupus awareness and
promote novel research into its cause and a
cure. Its new website is a resource for the
latest on lupus research, educational events,
and fundraisers in the Chicago area.
In Chicago and around the country, LRI
researchers are actively working to solve the
many mysteries of lupus. Of the 45 studies
currently funded, four are in Chicago—a $1.2
million investment.

Lupus Research Institute and Association of Black Cardiologists Launch National Educational Program on Lupus and Heart Disease
Five-City Series Focuses on Dramatically Increased Risk of Heart Disease In People with Lupus, Particularly Young Women and Women of Color
As the nation’s leader in funding novel
research on heart disease in lupus, the Lupus
Research Institute announced today that it is
launching a five-city Continuing Medical
Education (CME)
series to educate the medical community about
the significant cardiovascular dangers
present in individuals with
lupus—particularly young women and women of
color for whom heart disease is not normally
considered a risk.
The program aims to arm primary care
physicians, cardiologists and rheumatologists
with the latest information on cardiovascular
disease in lupus, a potentially
life-threatening complication, so as to
increase early detection and hopefully
prevent heart attack and stroke through
vigilance and aggressive treatment.
The joint programs will be held in New
York
(March 8), San Francisco (March 15),
Chicago
(March 28), Los Angeles (March 31) and
Detroit (April 25), with sessions
presented
by guest faculty members from the cardiology
and rheumatology communities.
Members
of the medical community are invited to
register for the free programs online at

Shady Ladies Luncheon and Auction of Celebrity Sunglasses Tickets on Sale Now!
On Saturday, March 10, 2007, the LRI will
present the 2nd annual Shady Ladies
Luncheon as part of the Winter Equestrian
Festival in Wellington, Florida.
At the luncheon, which will be chaired by
designer Mark Badgley, guests will have the
chance to bid on several pairs of sunglasses
previously worn by TV, movie and Broadway
stars. The "Shady Ladies" theme reflects a
common symptom of lupus: extreme
sensitivity to the sun. Doctors advise people
with lupus to stay in the shade, use sun
block, hats and sunglasses.
