People with Lupus at Higher Risk for Shingles

MedPage Today writer Nancy Walsh reports on a U.K. study showing that patients with lupus and other autoimmune diseases as well as certain other chronic conditions are at increased risk for shingles. While higher among older patients, the risk for shingles is still higher among younger people with lupus. Researchers note this finding raises the question for further study of whether vaccination against the herpes zoster virus should be recommended for people younger than 60 who have lupus and other risk factors. Currently, in the U.S. and the U.K. vaccination is recommended only for people over 60. The study was done by Harriet J. Forbes, MSc, and colleagues from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
