LRI to Testify on Behalf of Lupus Patients at Federal Appropriations Subcommittee Hearing

The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) is proud to have been selected to testify on behalf of the lupus community at a public witness hearing of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies this Wednesday, March 13.

Speaking for the LRI is renowned lupus expert, Dr. Richard Furie, Director, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Autoimmune Disease Treatment Center and Program in Novel Therapeutics and Chief, Division of Rheumatology and Allergy-Clinical Immunology North Shore - LIJ Health System, NY.

Dr. Furie will request that the committee strengthen current levels of support for the nation’s biomedical research enterprise with the necessary funding in the Fiscal 2014 appropriations bill to allow the National Institutes of Health to continue much-needed scientific and medical innovation in areas of exceptional promise for patient care.  His testimony will provide the Committee with a window into the particular suffering of the 1.5 million lupus patients living with a disabling and life-threatening disease that remains in desperate need of safer and more effective treatments.   Dr. Furie will also communicate why the federal government must invest in finding answers to lupus as the prototype for over 100 autoimmune diseases affecting one in five Americans.
