2010 Shady Ladies® Celebrity Sunglass Auction Raises Over $85,000 for Innovative Lupus Research

January 30, 2010, Wellington, FL—Nearly 200 “Shady Ladies”—double the number from last year!—streamed in to Wellington’s Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in late January for a “Guys and Dolls” themed evening featuring cocktails, a silent sunglass auction, and a ringside dinner and live auction during the “Nespresso Battle of the Sexes” equestrian competition.

The beneficiary of the $85,000+ raised at this 5th annual event: the Lupus Research Institute, the world’s leading private supporter of crucial innovative research for the 1.5 millions Americans with this often devastating chronic disease.

“Between the lively auction of celebrity sunglasses and the cheering support for the Battle of the Sexes jumping competition, the crowd was absolutely electric,” said Event Vice Chair Teri Wood. Other event vice chairs included Teri’s husband John Wood, Toni and Jean Goutal, Chris and Angela Paradysz, and Corry Terfloth Walker. The event’s honorary chairs were Mark Badgley and James Mischka.

Decorations for the evening included elements of the “Guys and Dolls” feature film such as 30-foot art deco bar, a 1950’s streetscape vignette, pinstriped black & white tablecloths with matching antique café lamps.  Guests were welcomed by the original “Guys & Dolls” film as it was projected on the marquis entrance tent.

Although in the shade of evening instead of a luncheon as in years past, the theme of “Shady Ladies” couldn’t be more relevant for people with lupus, as they should always shade themselves from direct sunlight that can trigger and exacerbate the illness. Hats, sunglasses, and sunblock do the job!
